Smear Tests During Pregnancy – What You Need to Know
Pregnancy is an exciting time, but it's also important to continue looking after your health. Many women wonder whether they can have a routine cervical screening (smear test) while they are pregnant.
In most cases, if you are due your routine smear test during pregnancy, it will usually be postponed until around 12 weeks after your baby is born. This is because pregnancy causes natural changes to the cervix, which can make cervical screening results more difficult to interpret.
If you have previously had an abnormal smear test, are currently under the care of a colposcopy clinic, or have been advised that you require ongoing monitoring, your healthcare team will let you know whether any tests are needed during your pregnancy. Always follow the advice of your GP, midwife, or specialist team.
Don't Ignore Symptoms
Although routine cervical screening is often delayed during pregnancy, you should never ignore symptoms that could need further investigation.
Speak to your GP, midwife, or maternity team as soon as possible if you experience:
- Unexplained vaginal bleeding
- Bleeding after sex
- Unusual vaginal discharge
- Ongoing pelvic pain
These symptoms do not necessarily mean you have cervical cancer, but they should always be assessed promptly to identify the cause and ensure you receive the right care.
Looking After You Matters
Pregnancy should never be a reason to delay seeking medical advice if something doesn't feel right. Trust your instincts and speak to a healthcare professional if you have any concerns.
At Amber's Legacy, we are passionate about raising awareness of cervical health, encouraging women to understand the importance of cervical screening, and reminding everyone that early detection can save lives.
